Windscreen installation - Windschutzscheibe installation

Beitrag von Daniel Shapiro »

Is it necessary to first install the aluminum insert into the windscreen rubber before installing the windscreen in the bus?

Thanks!

Ist es zu zuerst anbringt den Aluminiumeinsatz in den Windfanggummi, bevor man anbringt, Windschutzscheibe im Bus notwendig?

Danke!

windscreen rubber

Hello Daniel

i inserted the aluminium strip into the rubber before i installed the windscreen......but it's quite a work.....and the corners are really hard to get them totally correct......i guess the windscreen rubber with the aluminium strip is not an original one for the 319

a lot of succes rob

windscreen rubber

Beitrag von Daniel Shapiro »

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the info on installing the winscrren on the o319. I was wondering about the use of sealant where the rubber meets the body. I was considering applying a bead of sealant (silcone) under the outer lip of the rubber to seal it to the body after installation in the vehicle. Seems like a neater way to go.

By the way, I made the windscreen rubber into one continous piece by glueing the ends together with Loctite 401.

The problem I'm currently having is fitting the aluminum molding into the groove in the rubber. The corners (especially the lower corners with the small radius) are challenging! I'm considering first glueing the rubber to the windscreen edge so it stays put while I'm fitting the aluminum molding.

Your comments and suggestions on the above are appriciated!

Thanks,

Daniel

windscreen etc

Beitrag von Compay »

hello daniel

the lowest corners were indeed the most difficult!!
the rubbers are hard to get and expensive so if you have a good one
maybe is better not to use glue

i have to put my windowscreen (vornfenster in german, voorraam in dutch) this winter again. I think one of the solutions is after putting the windowscreen and the aluminium strip in the car....to cut a little (i guess triangle) piece of rubber out in the lower corners.....so the tension will be out...and then use some black sealant (sikaflex for instance) to glue the rubber only there....

but i don't know for sure
maybe others have better ideas, experiences with this kind of rubber!!

windscreen rubber

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your reply!

I obtained my windscreen rubber from Jurgen Sprung and you are right - it is expensive. I live in California where it it is generally warm and dry and as time passes, rubber tends to shrink and harden. To prevent the rubber from cracking as it shrinks and hardens, I cut the rubber a long as practical such that there is no tension.

Perhaps your rubber is too short and therefore too tight making it necessary to cut the outer corners.

Hope this helps

Regards,

Daniel

too short

Beitrag von Compay »

hello daniel

i guess it was not to short
i mounted the rubber with the aluminium strip on the windscreen
the rubber wasn't glued together at that moment
the opening we kept on the lower part in the middle
after fitting it into the bus
we glued it with sikaflex
so the tension is not because of the length of the rubber
it's more because of the aluminium strip

but this year/winter we will do this job again
so maybe we can do better this time
but it fits really good at this moment
only the lower corner are not 100% perfect

ciao rob

hi daniel,
the windscreen-rubber is a pain in the...
we did it with 10 hands and it took a while!
we taped the lower part with gaffa to the glass and took out the tape after mounting it. the tension on the windscreen was so hard, we really were afraid to ruin it. my advice: take a sip of beer first!
good luck,
christoph
