RPM vs Km/hr
RPM vs Km/hr
I plan to install into a L319 a 200 engine type 121 940 out of a 1967 Fintail 200. I do not think I will have to change the transmission or differential ratio, but to be sure, I need to know the ratio RPM/Km/h for different gears for the standard Diesel engine. If you have this kind of information, I will be pleased to get it.

Re: RPM vs Km/hr
Not getting an answer, I found on a threat, somebody telling he was driving the truck at 90 km/hr at 2800 RPM, certainly on 4th gear. This means to me that with a 200 engine, I drive usually on the highway at 3500 RPM, will give me a speed of 122 km/hr which is pretty fast for a truck like that.

Maybe this page helps: http://www.319er-club.de/techdat.html
If you want to drive 120 km/h with your 319 you will need a big Mountain with a long road to the valley
or many horses and a 5th gear.

Re: RPM vs Km/hr
Your main question is, if the gearbox ratio of the Diesel version is the same as from a Gas one?
If you look at the chart that Elo referred to, and do some calculation, it looks like all the 319s have the same gearbox ratio.
So what you are planning to do, seems to be same as shown in column no. 3 in this chart. This will give you a top speed of 112km/h. But not at 3500rpm, but at 5000rpm. That will be horrible loud in a 319.
I guess that this is not possible with a standard gearbox. 90km/h at 2800 rpm sounds like a 5 gear gearbox or an extra overdrive.
And from my calculation, if 2800 rpms would give you a sped of 90 km/h, then 3500rpm would end up at 112 km/h.
I have a 319 with the 68 hp engine, as shown in column no. 2 of the chart. I never drive at maximum speed, because its far to loud, and everything starts vibrating. A good travel speed fo rme is around 80km/h.
Good luck with your conversion. Keep us updated about the progress and please show some pics.

Re: RPM vs Km/hr
Hello,
Our O319D (with an OM621 engine) has in 9 years twice crossed the 100 km/hr line up to 101, running downhill on a German Highway with the wind coming from behind.
Its makes a terrible noise and I didn't feel very confortable inside... So, when a collegue asked me how many time my car needs to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hr, I answered 4,5 years, on average.
Gruss,
Gert

Re: RPM vs Km/hr
Thanks for the data page. The 200 engine supplies 110 HP SAE which is more than twice the Diesel engine. Keeping the same transmission I will get 122 km/h at 3500 because the ratio is linear, except if the clutch slips. At 3500 a 121 940 engine is not noisy at all. I drive one at 4000 RPM most of the time without concerns.

How do you calculate, to get 122 km/h at 3500 rpm?
If your calculation base is 90 km/h at 2800 rpm. I would calculate 90: 2800 * 3500 = 112
But you can't go 90 km/h at 2800 rpm with an originale gearbox.
I am sure, that the M121 isn't loud at 4000 rpm in a normal car. But in a 319 it is loud. Not only the engine will be loud, also the differential gear.
Re: RPM vs Km/hr
Sorry, 112 is OK, my mistake!
It is the second time I hear that the differential might be noisy! Another factor worries me, the non independent front suspension. I drove an old English car with this kind of suspension and I had to slow down a lot when crossing a railroad. Is it the case with a 319?

Re: RPM vs Km/hr
Referring to the data sheet, the 200 engine will turn at 5200 to go 112.5 km/h. I want to do a camper with the l319, but this kind of truck is built to do city traffic, not to be on highway most of the time.

Most of the people here use their L319 as a camper van. Most travel slow, some modified the van and can drive bit faster. E.g. by using a 5 gear gerabox or by adding an overdrive.
I don't remember my experience, when passing a railroad crossing, but the L319 is designed as a truck not as a sports car. So slowing down before cornering is normal.
Do you already have a L319, or are you just thinking about it?

Re: RPM vs Km/hr
I have the possibility to buy a trio needing a lot of work, but I can do a bus with the red and a camper with the blue L319. It is a project for the next 5 years.

Wow, 3 at a time. Thats cool.
My favourite is the blue van with the sliding doors. It dosen't look too bad from the one picture.
The two busses look like more work.
Go and get them.

Not possible to attend your meetings with a truck, I live summers in Canada and USA during winter. The blue bus is for parts.

Dear Andre,
Just kidding.. MB's don't swim or float.
Nice interior. Original seats in a O319 are very rare.
Greetings, Gert
