The Bačkora O319D

Beitrag von Kauly »

Hi everyone

the O319D is finally home. The nickname "Bačkora" means in our language home shoe, because it kinda look like.

History : My fathers best friend is profesionnal driver, and found this bus cca 25-30 years ago sitting in garden on his trip to factory making shirts in south of our Republic, where some kids smashes the interior, steal lights, emblems, windows ( even the front one  ) and etc ... He bought it, because he liked it, but he have also a lot of old cars, so then he resold it again to another friend, who store it in dry barn but passed away 2 years ago. Long story short... now we own it after 25+ years in barn.

We are car family, my father is old-school car mechanic and i worked in car spare parts for 11 years.

Can someone please help me with location of chassis number ?

I will put some more photos later on, it will need lot of attention. But i will try to be active with lot of pictures.

Crispy, but will be fixed

Thank you , for quick answer.

The number i found ends with 10 093635.

As i said earlier, car was pulled out 25+ years ago, where it was lifted up and put on jackstands ( wheels and suspension was in air ) .

We pulled it out by car from the barn, because brakes was little stuck. I had really great time pulling it with hand powered winch to trailer :)

So the first quest was to check the brake status and let it to move freely , so car can be pulled on garden ... first the driver side :

Left front : brake shoes looks OK ( at least for me ) , back plate OK, front drum OK- light damage on edge need welding ... at photo you can see crispy frame , but i will come to this later on , to stay active and entertain you.

Bild

Left back : brake shoes looks OK ( at least for me ) , back plate OK , rear drum , does anybody please know maximal diameter ? . I am not used to ask this much question, but information about this car is really rare.

Another topic will be wheel cylinders ... see you soon

Hi Kauly. From my information the drum diameter is 260mm. Because of the size I made a tool (jig) to get a measurement (Which I still have). I did not use a micrometer!

One of my drums was 261mm internal diameter, so clearly had been machined but they all accepted the same relined shoes ( with a little work 3 sets of brakes for rotation). 18 euro each to reline in UK Ferodo.

I can tell you the later Mercedes T2 and the 206/306d series allows oversize twice, regardless of original diameter. +1mm and +2mm on diameter.

Cylinders are widely available or can be re-sleeved in inox.

Seals cross over to imperial dimensions at least for cup seals. The aluminium shoes seem to blister so be careful that your linings are not loose because of trapped corrosion.

Good luck with your rebuild.

Regards
Rob

Its falling snow in our country , so we are chilling in warm garage and start working on the left side of the brake cylinders.

I also get a spare front axle with car ( that multiplies the number of brake cylinders now )

First step was to remove the stucked pistons , we use red DOT3 brake fluid.

1.png

Then it goes to warm bath with water and citron acid

2.png

The pistons was really stucked, so we have to use grease pump to release them :

3.png

and finally they are out

4.png

and here we realized , there is something wrong . The spare axle have original ATE internals, but the brakes from car was bored to larger diameter by some of previous owners.. good news that the internal seals are available to buy with no problem.

Difference in front pistons :

also the rear pistons was stucked :

Also the rear brakes was re-bored to larger diameter

after my touch :

Another step is brake shoes :

Before and after sand blasting with "schlacke" :

One brake shoe was damaged in bottom area, luckilly i get one brake shoe spare so we drill out the brake element, now we are waiting for new rivets.

Brake lining after outside surface clearment, now its at my friends workshop waiting for ultrasonic clearment of inner surface.
Banjo bolt can be used from Quick Brake QJDQU 3251.

Also we get hands on rear brakes too

Everybody is allways welcome, unfortunately this project is now #2 priority, we need to finish a VW T1 alias Bulli first.

Mercedes 319 and VW split bus are a cool combo.
One advantage, the headlights are interchangeable. :D

Do you have some pics of the split bus?
